How to Use Handshake to Find a Job/Internship

According to Handshake, in 2023, recruiters sent more than 16 million messages, giving students on Handshake a personal connection to the top companies hiring at their school. Below are ways you can use Handshake to find a Job/Internship.

Step 1: Make a Complete Handshake Profile

Profile page with user details including name, educational background, work experience, and extracurricular activities. Completion bar indicates profile is 100% complete.

To fully complete your profile in Handshake, you’ll want to complete the following sections in your profile:

  • Looking for
  • Summary
  • Skills
  • Work experience
  • Education
  • Courses
  • Organizations
  • Projects
  • Languages
  • Profile Picture

Step 2: Use Filters and Key Words

Start by clicking Jobs on the menu bar of your Handshake dashboard. This will take you to the job search page, where you can see recommended jobs and begin your search. You can narrow down the jobs you see by using filters and keywords.

Don’t forget to save the jobs you like so Handshake can continue to send you similar roles!

Step 3: Send a Message to the Employer

If you would like to contact an employer via Handshake whom you’ve never had an interaction with, you can message them via:

  • An active job posting
  • The company’s profile page 
  • A message attachment
