Career and Professional Development (CPD) provides resources and experiences to help students leverage their Jesuit education to achieve their full potential. CPD’s programs, staff, and resources help students:

  • Identify their values, interests, and skills
  • Understand how their skills relate to professional life
  • Explore a wide range of careers that reflect their values, interests, and skills
  • Develop and pursue a career plan for life after college

Peer Advisors are an integral component in providing vocations discernment and career services to students.  Peer Advisors also provide vital assistance to programs such as Career Expo, Grad School Fair, Career Treks, Career Chats, SFTV Pathways in Entertainment – and many more.  If you are excited to be a part of this dynamic and growing team, we’d encourage you to apply!

OVERVIEW

Peer Advisors welcome students to Career and Professional Development (CPD) and assist them with a range of activities, including exploring majors, perusing internships and jobs, and applying to graduate school.

Peer Advisors play an integral role in orienting students to CPD’s vast resources.  They train students on Handshake, CPD’s online career management tool; advising on choosing a major assisting students with resume and cover letters; help them navigate searches for jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities; help students network with alumni (informational interviewing/job shadowing), and work with them on identifying electronic and print resources for all of their vocational and career needs. Additional responsibilities will be determined based on the specialty area, as well as other duties befitting applicant’s specific areas of interest in the field of Career Services.

  • CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assess the needs of students to direct them to proper services and suggest ways that CPD could benefit them
    • Utilize specialized academic/professional interests and skills to work with Assistant Directors to develop relevant projects and programs for improving and expanding CPD’s services
    • Assisted in the preparation and operations of CPD’s Career Expo, Graduate School Fair and various other career-oriented events
    • Perform general office/clerical work such as editing documents using Microsoft Office, answering phones, making copies, sorting forms and flyers, placing promotional A-frames around campus, and preparing gifts
    • Serving as a representative of the CPD to students, alumni, faculty, staff and employers
    • Support other CPD–run programs through attendance at events.
    • Demonstrate the following skills: strong work ethic, customer service, interpersonal communication, positive attitude, professionalism, and organizational skills
  • QUALIFICATIONS

    We expect the selection process to be a competitive one!  In particular, are looking for the following traits and skills:

    • Demonstrated interest and involvement in vocational discernment and career development
    • Strong interpersonal and professional communication skills with the ability to listen, advise, teach and explain
    • Enthusiasm for helping other students and a customer-service orientation
    • Ability to effectively manage high volumes of student walk-in traffic
    • Sense of resourcefulness and creative problem solving skills
    • Self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a team member within given deadlines
    • Track record of successfully building rapport and new relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds
    • Patience, and ability to effectively manage multiple priorities
    • Ability to collaborate with a range of professional and administrative staff

    TIME COMMITMENT

    • Three day Summer Training week prior to the first day of class
    • Monthly Professional Development evening meetings
    • 8-10 hours per week

    1. Is the position paid? Yes. The position is paid an hourly rate. Candidates will be informed of the hourly rate during the application process. This position is eligible for Work-Study funding; but is not limited to Work-Study students.
    2. Who is eligible to apply? Rising sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students from all majors are welcome to apply.
    3. What is the time commitment?
      • Attendance at the two-day training in late August 2019
      • Attend monthly hour-long staff meetings
      • 8-10 hours per week
      • Availability during some weekend and evening hours for special events and presentations

TRAINING

Peer Advisors are required to attend (and will be paid for) all training sessions.  Career and Professional Development provides Peer Advisors with expertise, both through intensive workshops before the academic year begins, and throughout the year via monthly topical meetings.  Mandatory training sessions will be held in August prior to classes beginning
