Informational Interviews 101

What is an informational interview? An informational interview is an informal conversation with someone working in an area that interests you who will give you information and advice. It is an effective research tool in addition to reading books, exploring the Internet and examining job descriptions. It is not a job interview, and the objective is not to find job openings.

What to Do During an Informational Interview

  1. Be on time
  2. Have a few questions prepared to learn more about them, their career story, the industry, and the company (if applicable)
  3. Take notes if you’d like
  4. Ask for names of other people to meet so as to gain different perspectives
  5. Follow up with a thank you email or LinkedIn message

How to Request an Informational Interview

Sample Email Request:

Hello __________,

My name is Iggy Lion and I’m a junior majoring in English at Loyola Marymount University.

I heard you speak at an event sponsored by Career and Professional Development last semester. Although I am not currently looking for a job, I have become very interested in public relations and would like to learn more about the field. Would it be possible to schedule 20 to 30 minutes with you at your convenience to ask a few questions and get your advice on how best to prepare to enter the field?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Iggy Lion

Sample LinkedIn Direct Message:

Dear Sam,

I am a LMU junior and saw your profile in the LinkedIn Alumni pages. May I have 20 minutes to ask you about your experience with IBM?  I am exploring marketing careers in technology companies, and your insights would be very helpful. I know you may be busy, so will try you again next week if we are unable to connect this week.

Thank you,
Iggy Lion
