Networking can be daunting… but it doesn’t have to be

Quick advice?

Focus on building a relationship, one person at a time. And focus on what you can offer the individual not just what they can offer you, in terms of advice, insights, or perspective. Start with your network, Lions. And yes, you do have a network (professors, classmates, family friends, coaches, and supervisors). Career and Professional Development (CPD) offers support on finding mentors, performing outreach to potential employers and alumni, and sharing programs to engage in a supportive environment.

LMU on LinkedIn

Students are encouraged to create a LinkedIn profile and connect with alumni, faculty, staff and professionals you meet during your time at LMU. You can look up alumni by typing in “Loyola Marymount University” into LinkedIn’s search bar, and filter based on location, company, and more.

Introduce yourself and ask for an informational interview, which is simply a coffee chat, curiosity conversation, or exploration call. Here’s a link for how to reach out professionally and thoughtfully.

With over 70,000 Lions on LinkedIn, inquiring about an internship, job shadowing opportunity, or conversation is an ideal way to gain clarity on your next steps and build a professional network for yourself. Remember to focus on relationships, creating and maintaining, at LMU and beyond.
